Door bells are very useful to have at your house since these eliminate the need for visitors to knock on your gate. If you’re thinking of installing or upgrading a door bell in your house, it would help if you learned a bit more about how they work.

First of all, a door bell has a button that the visitor to your house can push to activate the system. The button is connected to a transformer which reduces the current that runs through it to the right voltage so that everything works smoothly. The current triggers the sound system to make a noise to alert the person inside the house that there is someone outside. There are so many door bell sounds to choose from since the technology has gone a long way since the earlier dingdong sounds. Now, some door bells can even play pop music or whatever sound you like because they come with recording capabilities.

Nearly all wired door bells have two flat bars and two solenoids. The flat bars are tuned to two different notes or pitches, and are mounted just below the two solenoids. Once the door bell is pressed, the first solenoid will then strike the bottom bar, and when the door bell button is released, the other top bar is struck.

There are also wireless door bells which basically act like transmitters that connect with the door bell receiver using radio signals. When the receiver receives the door bell signal, the sound system will be activated. They are now the most popular door bells because they are so easy to set up. This is very much unlike wired door bells that require installation of a wiring system, which would often entail cutting into walls. The only common problem with wireless door bells is that you may need to change the batteries on the system every few months to keep things running smoothly.

There are so many door bell designs to choose from. There are those that look exactly like antique, old fashioned door bells, which are perfect for medieval-themed houses. The door bell is attached to an actual bell that would ring when someone is at the door.

The door bell wiring system can actually be used to establish an intercom system. This will enable you to talk to the person outside your house so that you can ascertain the identity before letting the visitor in.

There will always be people who want to put signals on doors in order to alert them that a guest is coming in. During the medieval times, people installed elaborate knockers on their doors. This progressed to antique bell systems during the 17th century, and the electric buzzer decades later.

Joseph Henry invented the electric door bell in the 19th century. He was a prolific inventor and scientist, and was actually the Smithsonian Institute’s first Director. He made scientific advances in the field of communications and electricity. In fact, aside from inventing the door bell, he is also credited as having invented the early technology that made telegraphs possible. He also made significant progress in developing the first electric motor.

The problem with the electric buzzer is that its harsh sound annoyed most users. In the 1930’s, various companies started manufacturing musical door chimes that sounded a lot more soothing than the electric buzz. Telechime and Edwards were among the first companies who created solenoid-struck door chimes. During World War II, production had to be stopped for a while, although Rittenhouse, Nutone and Edwards were able to recover quickly after the war ended.

By the late 1960’s, door chimes were no longer considered to be luxury or novelty items since nearly all houses had them. This led to the closing of the major factories and the mushrooming of much smaller companies.

Now, there are so many different door chimes that can suit each personality. You can ever customize the system so that it will play your favourite song. You won’t need to complain about the door chimes sounds because you’ll be the one directly loading the song that will play.

If you need to buy a new door chime or replace your old one, you have two options – go for the traditional wired door chimes or choose wireless. If you choose the more modern wireless option, then your door chimes installation will be quite easy. You only need to attach the button at your gate and put the other end somewhere inside your house. Installing wired door chimes are another matter, and you should ask for assistance from a trained electrician when setting this up.

Of course, the usual problem with wireless door chimes is the reliability of the connection. There is also the problem of limited reach, so that you may have to install the bell very near to the door so that it can detect the signal from the button outside your house.

You’ve just finished finally getting your garden landscaped. You’ve had a couple of evergreens planted and have put a few ornamental bushes around the garden. You’ve installed a picturesque pathway made of cobblestones that leads to a patio made of the same material. You’ve placed a coffee table on one side of the patio and a set of comfortable wicker chairs on the other side. Now you’re ready to sit back, relax and enjoy your garden, right? Well, the view is lovely for sure, but you can add something to make your garden even more soothing.

You may want to consider adding garden wind chimes so that your garden will sound as relaxing as it looks. There are actually several types to choose from, such as the highly popular bamboo wind chimes. According to history, chimes were first used in Asian temples and pagodas where it is believed that the sound they make from the wind can drive away evil spirits. In the 1800’s, the popularity of the chimes reached the Western shore where they were now used in various public places. Instead of putting them in temples, they are now placed in offices, gardens, houses, resorts and outdoor spas. They are considered to be an important added feature to a lot of landscaping projects.

Aside from bamboo, there are also chimes made of metal, ceramic, glass and different kinds of wood. Chimes made of different materials make different distinct sounds.

Chimes are usually made of rods, a platform, a central pendulum and a weight. When it comes to the rods, there should be different length and thickness so that each rod can make a sound in a different note. The platform is where the rods are suspended, while the pendulum is a piece that is suspended at the very center so that it can swing around freely. The purpose of the pendulum is to make the rods strike each other in order to produce that lovely, relaxing sound you’re after whenever a wind passes by. The weight is usually at the lower end of the string that is tied to the pendulum, and is responsible for catching the wind.

If you want to make your garden look extra special, use some large wind chimes as a focal point. These are very effective to add drama and a touch of class to your landscaped garden.
